The Caribbean island of St. Lucia is one of the jewels of the Windward Islands. With its endless banana plantations, picturesque hamlets and stunning harbours it is a constant reminder of an older Caribbean before tourism really took off.
One of our guests, Andy, recently returned from a week of idyllic sailing, and could not wait to share his experience!
When we got off the plane in Vieux Fort, St Lucia, I immediately noticed the wind. At first I was a little concerned; it was strong and as most of my sailing takes place on the Great Lakes in Canada, the Ocean seemed a bit daunting. We immediately departed to the boat in Rodney Bay, which meant that we got to see some of St Lucia before we boarded. It is a truly beautiful Island with high and low winding roads through rolling banana plantations and old volcanic mountains covered with lush plant life.
While at the Antigua Charter Show we got the chance to visit the 193′ Luxury Expedition Yacht SEAWOLF which was originally built as an ocean going tugboat. The Expedition style yachts have always intrigued us as brokers and she has to be one of finest available for charter.

Her offerings don’t stop with volume – 2 LADIES also offers 6 cabins, accommodating 12 guests in harmonious luxury. She also has two owner’s suites, cleverly using space on the bridge deck in order to give two couples the pleasure of having a beautifully equipped master cabin with study areas and lounging space for relaxing and unwinding after a day underneath the Caribbean sun.
Recently several Caribbean nations committed to reducing their carbon footprint by agreeing to replace diesel generators, which are currently used to produce the majority of the electricity on the islands, with renewable sources such as wind and solar power. The new agreements were reached at meetings arranged by the Carbon War Room, a non-profit organisation started by British entrepreneur Richard Branson best known as the founder of the Virgin Group.
Leading by example Mr Branson has announced a deal with NRG Energy to install solar and wind power on Necker Island, which he owns privately. It is estimated that when complete these renewable sources will generate up to 80% of his island’s power requirements. Mr Branson also alluded to the need for ‘creative entrepreneurship’ in order to win the war on climate change by making clean energy alternatives the same price, or less expensive than the fossil fuel alternatives.
The BVI are leading the way and have already begun making small changes to reduce their consumption of fossil fuels. They are looking at waste to energy plants and have begun replacing bulbs in street lights with LEDS.
The BVI and the Caribbean as a whole remain one of the most beautiful natural paradises in the world with residents such as Mr Branson keen to keep it as such. A sailing yacht charter in the Caribbean is not only a fantastic way to spend a vacation with friends and family, but it is also a very environmentally friendly vacation. With reliable winds the BVI is a sailing destination for true sailors who love being under sail with the wind in their hair!
