Richard Branson is leading the war on Climate Change in the Caribbean – find out more here

Recently several Caribbean nations committed to reducing their carbon footprint by agreeing to replace diesel generators, which are currently used to produce the majority of the electricity on the islands, with renewable sources such as wind and solar power. The new agreements were reached at meetings arranged by the Carbon War Room, a non-profit organisation started by British entrepreneur Richard Branson best known as the founder of the Virgin Group.

BVI - A Caribbean paradise!

Leading by example Mr Branson has announced a deal with NRG Energy to install solar and wind power on Necker Island, which he owns privately. It is estimated that when complete these renewable sources will generate up to 80% of his island’s power requirements. Mr Branson also alluded to the need for ‘creative entrepreneurship’ in order to win the war on climate change by making clean energy alternatives the same price, or less expensive than the fossil fuel alternatives.

Necker Island - soon to take 80% of its electricity from renewable sources

The BVI are leading the way and have already begun making small changes to reduce their consumption of fossil fuels. They are looking at waste to energy plants and have begun replacing bulbs in street lights with LEDS.

The BVI and the Caribbean as a whole remain one of the most beautiful natural paradises in the world with residents such as Mr Branson keen to keep it as such. A sailing yacht charter in the Caribbean is not only a fantastic way to spend a vacation with friends and family, but it is also a very environmentally friendly vacation. With reliable winds the BVI is a sailing destination for true sailors who love being under sail with the wind in their hair!
