Spain

Yacht Charter in Mallorca Spain
Mallorca, Spain

As the third largest wine-producing region in the world, Spain offers a variety of wines celebrated for their balance of ripe fruit, structure, and complexity. They range from refreshing whites and sparkling wines to full-bodied reds. Whether you are enjoying tapas ashore or dining on board, Spanish wines offer the perfect complement to a Mediterranean yacht charter.

Red

For a taste of Spain's renowned winemaking traditions, sample red wines from Rioja, where the Tempranillo grape takes center stage. It produces elegant red wines with notes of ripe berries, gentle spice, and layers of complexity. From approachable Crianzas to more complex Reserva and Gran Reserva styles, Rioja offers a sophisticated introduction to these Spanish wines.

White

For popular white wines from Spain, look for local Balearic varieties such as Prensal Blanc, also known as Moll. It offers fresh acidity, with notes of citrus, green apple, and soft herbal tones, often with a gentle saline edge from island vineyards. From Ibiza, the Malvasia is typically more aromatic and textured. It shows ripe stone fruit, floral notes, and a subtle minerality, making it an excellent pairing for seafood.

Sparkling Wine

Cava is Spain's benchmark sparkling white wine. Primarily made from Catalonia, it delivers bubbles, citrus, and orchard fruit, often with subtle notes of brioche. Cava is made similarly to Champagne; however, its second fermentation occurs in the bottle. As a bright, delicate wine, it is a popular choice for enjoying on deck while cruising.

Rosé

Spanish Rosés are incredibly food-friendly and versatile, typically made with popular varieties such as the Tempranillo grape. The wine tends to be slightly fuller-bodied and includes vibrant flavors of strawberry and citrus with a balanced acidity. Perfect for leisurely lunches, fresh seafood, and warm afternoons on the Mediterranean.

Sardinia

Shores of Sardinia
Rugged Coast of Sardinia

With a unique Mediterranean environment and age-old vines, Sardinian grapes produce wines with remarkable concentration and character. Known for using native grapes, wines produced in this region have a distinct, fresh flavor with subtle salinity that pairs excellently with seafood.

Red

The signature red grape in Sardinia is the Cannonau, which produces full-bodied wines that are warming, yet softer than a Cabernet Sauvignon. It offers notes of ripe cherry, raspberry, herbs, and spices. Carignano Del Sulcis is a rich and elegant wine with notes of black cherry and plum. It has a velvety texture and tends to be darker, smoother, and more structured than the Cannonau.

White

For white wine, the Vermentino di Gallura is the only wine produced in Sardinia with a DOCG designation, Italy's highest wine classification. It shows notes of citrus zest, stone fruit, and florals, with a bright acidity and salty minerality, revealing a crisp, refreshing sip that is comparable to a Sauvignon Blanc.

Sparkling Wine

For a classic, everyday sparkling wine, look no further than a Prosecco DOC. Perfect for aperitivos, a prosecco is fruit-forward and makes a great base for Aperol Spritzes. One of Italy's top sparkling wines is the Franciacorta DOCG, which is not unlike France's Champagne. It has notes of brioche, lemon curd, and baked apple, with mineral undertones.

Rosé

Rosés in Sardinia are typically made from Cannonau and offer more depth than Rosés from lighter varieties. They tend to be dry, elegant, and show notes of wild strawberry, cherry, grapefruit, and herbs.

Amalfi Coast

Fiordo di Furore, AmalfI Coast

The Amalfi Coast is a unique wine-producing region, where most of the vineyard work is done by hand, due to the climate and geography. It tends to produce grapes that are ripe, fresh, and result in wines that are lighter, brighter, and more mineral-driven.

Red

The benchmark grape for Italian red wines is Sangiovese. It makes up at least 80% of Chianti, but most wine producers use 100% Sangiovese grapes. As one of the most versatile red wines, it shows notes of sour cherry, red currant, violet, and Mediterranean herbs, with a bright acidity and firm tannins.

White

For a fantastic seafood pairing, look for white wines produced with Falanghina grapes. It has a crisp acidity and shows notes of citrus, green apple, and pear. For a structured wine with depth and the ability to age, look for Greco di Tufo. Fuller-bodied, it shows lemon zest, grapefruit, pear, and white peach, with a pronounced saline minerality.

Sparkling Wine

While on charter in Italy, sip a classic Prosecco DOC, which pairs perfectly with brunch or a light afternoon bite. Alternatively, for celebratory evenings, look for a bottle of Franciacorta DOCG, which can be compared to Champagne.

While some Croatian wines use international varietals, many are produced with grapes indigenous to Croatia. The region's unique landscape produces wines with bright natural acidity, a distinct mineral character, and subtle saline notes.

Red

For Croatian reds, look for wines produced on the Pelješac Peninsula, such as the Plavac Mali, which gives notes of blackberry, black cherry, dried fig, and Mediterranean herbs. It is a powerful wine that is similar to a robust Zinfandel. Similarly rich in fruit flavors, a Babić has a slightly more savory profile with velvety tannins and notes of sour cherry and dark berries.

White

The Malvasia Istriana is the signature grape for white wines produced in Croatia. It has notes of green apple, pear, and almond, with a saline minerality that the region is known for. From Dalmatia, Pošip gives citrus, stone fruit, and a mineral freshness that goes well with seafood. Slightly rarer is the Grk, known for its crisp acidity, citrus notes, distinct minerality, and long savory finish.
