The sun shines all year round in the glorious Caribbean, with only the odd scattered shower breaking into the 12 hours of sun a day. Daily temperatures remain consistent all year round, with only 5°C separating the warmest and coolest months of the year. The Caribbean enjoys its dry season between December and May, with refreshing rain showers arriving between June and November. Splendid sailing conditions are ensured by the easterly trade winds that rarely affect this tranquil paradise.

If you’re chartering a luxury yacht, you can start your holiday on any of the major islands – often determined only by the availability of flights. Those coming from North America usually start in St Thomas while Europeans can more easily get to Antigua, St Martin, Martinique, Barbados or St Lucia.

For a little inspiration, discover our 7 day Virgin Islands motor yacht itinerary and 7 day USVI crewed catamaran itinerary for routes and activities. The Caribbean is incredibly popular for Christmas and New Year, but if you'd like any other suggestions about the Caribbean, please feel free to contact us.

Antigua and Barbuda

Caribbean Diving

Once a scavenger’s haven, Barbuda is now a highly desired snorkelling location, as well as boasting an incredible bird sanctuary. Antigua, the former port for Admiral Nelson’s fleet, offers a tremendous wealth of secluded, powdery soft beaches, stunning coral reefs and a plethora of beautiful bays.

The easternmost island in the Caribbean, Barbados was under British rule until 1966 – giving it a rich blend of British, African and Caribbean culture. Being the only all-coral island in the Caribbean Sea, Barbados supplies visitors with incredible diving sites and beaches. Sightseers can explore colonial Bridgetown, the monkeys of the mangrove forests, the Mount Gay Rum refinery and of course miles and miles of striking Caribbean landscape.

British Virgin Islands (BVI)

With gentle and reliable trade winds the sailing conditions in the BVI are second to none. Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, Peter Island, Norman Island and Anegada all have their own unique charm and attraction, such as the imposing boulder field perfect for snorkelling known as “The Baths”. Often recommended as the best place for your first sailboat or catamaran charter, the BVI is the birthplace of bareboat chartering and lays claim to great beach restaurants, well-established sailing infrastructure and yachts to suit every need.

7 Day Sailing itinerary in the British Virgin Islands

The youngest island in the Caribbean is blessed with dramatic scenery, free-flowing rivers and untouched forests as it continues to live up to its reputation as the ‘Nature Island’. The beauty of this island is unscathed by modern tourism thanks to rolling hills and secluded coastlines which all provide an ideal place for hiking, rafting, cycling and diving.

A rolling, mountainous island covered with fragrant spice trees and rare tropical flowers, Grenada is filled to the brim with cascading rivers, waterfalls and rainforests. With unimaginably beautiful mountain lakes, Grenada has an inland that is as equally picturesque as its uniquely volcanic black and white coastline. Touted as one of the friendliest cities in the Caribbean, Grenada’s capital St George’s is an unforgettable pit stop.

Sunny Bay

Along with several smaller islands, Guadeloupe consists of the twin islands Basse-Terre to the west and Grand Terre to the east. Basse-Terre is a thickly forested and mountainous island, while Grand-Terre is a limestone island of coral origin with low hills extending through the central and southern parts of the island.

Once a French colony, the two islands of Guadeloupe offer charterers a unique location while still retaining its rich Franco-Caribbean culture and identity. The archipelago is a wonderful mix of modern cities, rural towns, rainforests and secluded beaches, as well as plenty of sugar and rum!

Often described as “a little bit of France in the Caribbean", Martinique exudes a distinctly French feeling in amongst the excellence of its Caribbean cuisine. While catamarans dominate this area, the sailing infrastructure in general of Martinique is well developed, with plenty of charter boats in Le Marin.

You can travel from Sainte-Anne, the southernmost village to Saint-Pierre, famous for the 1902 volcanic eruption of Mount Pelée and sail near HMS Diamond Rock, exploring the many wonders the island has along her shores.

Vieques and Culebra, the Spanish Virgin Islands

The Spanish Virgin Islands, consisting of Vieques and Culebra lies to the west of the US Virgin Islands and are part of Puerto Rico. Vieques offers the lush, unspoiled Caribbean of times gone by, with ample diving, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and many other activities for nature lovers.

With water depths rarely exceeding one hundred feet Culebra is ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. Hard and soft corals are found in the shallows and magnificent reefs encircle the island where tropical fish and other sea life are found.

St Barths and Anguilla

St Barts

Steep hills divide the island of St Barths into several valleys, exposing its shoreline of around 20 beautiful white sandy beaches, most with a coral reef and several offshore Marine Reserves. St Barths is a prime spot for all charters, but it's especially renowned for its superyachts, as the island is a hideaway for may rock stars and celebrities who come to enjoy the French-inspired culture and cuisine.

The British overseas territory of Anguilla lies further north than St Barths and is popular for its exceptional cuisine whereby fresh seafood is prepared under the influences of Caribbean, British, French, and Spanish tastes.

St Kitts

Caribbean Diving

The combination of natural beauty, gorgeous weather, warm waters, and white sandy beaches make St Kitts one of the most seductive spots in the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus first spotted St Kitts in 1493 when it was populated with native tribes, but the Europeans did not colonize until the British arrived in 1623. Its strategic location and valuable sugar trade led to an advanced and luxurious development that was amongst the best in the Colonial Caribbean.

The development of St Kitts has been well controlled, keeping the island free of crowds and unspoiled. If you’re a nature lover you can tour lava formations, tropical forests and seaside lagoons. Colonial plantation buildings have been transformed into stunning hotels and there are several quaint shopping areas.

St Martin/St Maarten

Caribbean Island

Boat enthusiasts will find plenty of charter options on the island of St Martin, as it's a hub for sailing and regattas. It's also a great stopover if you are cruising the Antilles. St Martin is the smallest island in the world ever to have been partitioned between two different nations, having been shared by both the French and the Dutch for almost 350 years. Each side has managed to retain much of the distinctiveness of its own national culture.

You will find comfort and style in the French territory, with secluded beaches, plush accommodation and restaurants that offer some of the finest dinings in the Caribbean. The vibrant Dutch region, on the other hand, is more bustling and has been developed with more of informal Dutch charm.

St Lucia

St Lucia

St Lucia offers great diving and snorkeling while the rainforest and the Soufriere volcano, the world's only drive-in volcanic crater, are just waiting to be explored. St Lucia is a travelers dream - a small, lush tropical gem that is still relatively unknown. St Lucia thrives off its South Pacific vibe, with soaring peaks, rain forests and colorful birds.

St Vincent and the Grenadines

St Vincent&The Grenadines

St Vincent is a spectacularly lush island packed with rain forests, high mountains, deep valleys and dramatic shorelines. St Vincent and the Grenadines are remote (most easily reached from Barbados) and therefore not as touristy or glitzy as some Caribbean islands, but just as beautiful!

They are perfect for travellers searching for quiet getaways surrounded in natural beauty. Mustique is a very secluded island offering quiet relaxation, beauty and endless possibilities for exploration both on land and in the water. There are several other small islands - Bequia, Canouan, Union - all beautiful, secluded and great destinations for relaxing, diving or exploring.

Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad can offer both a bustling city - Port of Spain - and discreet solitude. The island has gorgeous, sandy beaches and dense forest along the north coast as well as miles of protected beaches and wetlands to the east.

Tobago is less developed than Trinidad but offers the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere. As ever, the island provides plenty of palm-lined beaches, lush rain forests and pristine coral reefs teeming with diverse marine life.

US Virgin Islands: St Thomas, St John, St Croix

St Thomas, the most developed island, offers all you would want for a Caribbean holiday - beautiful water, green hills, soft breezes, and American efficiency and comfort. You can find just about anything you want on St Thomas from quiet villas to nightlife, golf courses, and remarkable cuisine.

The three major US Virgin Islands are St Thomas, St John, and St Croix. St John is just 20 minutes by ferry from St Thomas but offers a completely different experience. Two-thirds of the island is a protected National Park, offering quiet sailing, breath-taking views and beautiful coves to anchor in for the night. St Croix, the largest island, lies 40 minutes south of St Thomas.

Besides the beaches, St Croix offers ruins and restorations of sugar mills and plantation houses wherever you go. Despite being less mountainous than the other islands, it offers a wide variety of landscapes from rolling hills to rain forests and cactus-covered plains.
