Naxos, Greece Yacht Charter Guide

Very different from the refined islands of Mykonos and Santorini, rough-and-ready Naxos features some of the most amazing countryside in the Cyclades. Rolling hills are filled with sheep, goats and cattle, along with all manner of market gardens.  A visit to the island also offers excellent Ancient Greek ruins and a large selection of fine beaches.

Places to Visit

Steeped in history, the old quarter, Kastro, was the seat of the Venetian Duchy of Naxos who ruled most of the Cyclades from his fortress from 1204. The beautiful, steep lanes here wind through a beautiful example of traditional Greece. Tavernas dotted around the town are some of the best in Greece. They sell, almost exclusively, local produce; including the renowned local potatoes and island cheese

Just outside Chora, the Portára, immediately north of town is a must see. This impressive doorway is the only part of the Temple of Delain Apollo that was finished. The gate was built in the 6th century BC as part of a temple to Apollo, was never finished due to local wars. Christians later built a church on top of the unfinished temple. You may want to come here in the late afternoon to see the temple and gorgeous sunset.

The imposing Temple of Demeter at Gyroúla, on a hilltop overlooking a fertile valley, is also a wonderful legacy of ancient Greece.

Beaches

The biggest draw is Náxos’s entire southwest-facing coast which, from the resort of Ágios Prokópios down to Agiassós near the island’s southerly cape, essentially forms one great long beach, separated by little headlands.
