Naxos, Greece Yacht Charter Guide

Very different from the refined islands of Mykonos and Santorini, rough-and-ready Naxos features some of the most amazing countryside in the Cyclades. Rolling hills are filled with sheep, goats and cattle, along with all manner of market gardens.  A visit to the island also offers excellent Ancient Greek ruins and a large selection of fine beaches.

Places to Visit

Steeped in history, the old quarter, Kastro, was the seat of the Venetian Duchy of Naxos who ruled most of the Cyclades from his fortress from 1204. The beautiful, steep lanes here wind through a beautiful example of traditional Greece. Tavernas dotted around the town are some of the best in Greece. They sell, almost exclusively, local produce; including the renowned local potatoes and island cheese

Just outside Chora, the Portára, immediately north of town is a must see. This impressive doorway is the only part of the Temple of Delain Apollo that was finished. The gate was built in the 6th century BC as part of a temple to Apollo, was never finished due to local wars. Christians later built a church on top of the unfinished temple. You may want to come here in the late afternoon to see the temple and gorgeous sunset.

The imposing Temple of Demeter at Gyroúla, on a hilltop overlooking a fertile valley, is also a wonderful legacy of ancient Greece.

Beaches

The biggest draw is Náxos’s entire southwest-facing coast which, from the resort of Ágios Prokópios down to Agiassós near the island’s southerly cape, essentially forms one great long beach, separated by little headlands.

Agios Anna Beach, Naxos

Agios Giorgios. Near the capital, Chora, this sandy beach is ideal families. Extremely popular, however, be sure to arrive early to bag the best spots.

Agios Prokopios. Considered to be one of the best beaches in Naxos with stunning scenery at the north end where rocks penetrate into the sea while, further south, an array of trees allow visitors to relax in the shade

Agia Anna. A narrow, sandy beach which is popular throughout the year. Overlooked by lovely bar-cafes, caiques (old greek fishing boats) and yachts regularly gather in the bay. Plaka. Distinguished for its wonderful white sand and the emerald waters, Plaka is very popular among nudists whilst remaining family friendly and accommodating to all.

Orkos. A long (1,5km) pebbled beach with cedar trees, this collection of small beaches is good for surfing and is popular with water sports enthusiasts.

Mikri Vigla. Mikri Vigla is situated in the southwestern part of Naxos. With white sand and crystal clear emerald and azure waters, it is considered to be as one of the most beautiful places on the island.

Kastraki. A quiet sandy beach with crystal clear waters, Kastraki is the ideal place in Naxos for those who wish to enjoy a quiet vacation by the sea.

Alyko. Regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, it is a white sand beach with a forest of cedar trees and clear emerald waters; perfect for those looking to escape the crowds.

Pyrgaki. Rarely crowded, the area combines the beauty of the sea and inland beauty. The sandhills and abundant cedar trees impress even the most demanding visitors.

Ayiassos. Protected from the strong north wind, Ayiassos is a wonderful beach with clear and calm waters. Do not miss to taste the marvellous local dishes at the tavern right above the beach.

Lionas. A quiet bay located in northwestern Naxos. Nowadays the village is quiet and visitors can find a few taverns where they can enjoy fresh fish.

Abram. One of the most famous and easily accessible beaches of the northern Naxos, ideal for those who wish to enjoy a peaceful, relaxing holiday.

Apollon. A tranquil beach with crystal clear waters. The overlooking statue 'Kouros”, is the main attraction.
