British Virgin Islands 2024 Charter Report – What’s new in the BVI?

We recently toured the BVI to see what had changed for 2024 and what had remained timelessly and thankfully the same!

Timeless BVI – What hasn’t changed?

The good news – almost everything that makes the BVI the world’s most special charter destination is timeless and unchanged. We’ve been going to the BVI for over 30 years, and all the things we love – the gorgeous islands, pristine beaches, the snorkeling, the beach bars and restaurants, the amazing sunsets, all bring the same wonder and beauty as they have for decades.

A charter that starts in the Bight on Norman Island, passes through the Indians, the Caves, the Wreck of the Rhone, the Baths, Virgin Gorda’s North Sound, Anegada, Sandy Spit, and the beaches of Jost Van Dyke is still as amazing as ever. When we first bareboated in 1992, we visited Willy T’s, the Pirates, The Bitter End, Foxy’s, and the Soggy Dollar Bar, and, while they all were renewed after Irma’s destruction, we were thrilled to enjoy each one again in this year!

What’s New?

WINDWARD – Bali 5.4 Catamaran

It’s a cat’s world, we’re just sailing in it. The most obvious change in the BVI chartering world is the size and type of yachts. While there are still plenty of monohull bareboats sailing the waters, the BVI is now a catamaran world. And the catamarans have become so much larger and more luxurious! Another change: whereas there are still plenty of Lagoon cats around, Bali catamarans are literally everywhere. Charterers are drawn to their walk-through salon that goes directly to the large foredeck, and their high-quality fit and finish.

We were lucky enough to spend a week aboard WINDWARD, with the delightful Aussie Crew of Jon and Tracy. The salon, kitchen, cabins, and decks were all spacious, comfortable, and impeccably cared for. Consider a Bali catamaran for your next BVI (or anywhere) charter, you’ll be impressed.

Power to the People. Not only have the catamarans become the predominant type of yacht, and much larger than 10 years ago, powercats are everywhere as well. Charterers choose these for their excellent comfort and fuel efficiency, without needing to hoist sails. Five years ago a powercat would be an anomaly, today they can be found at every anchorage.

SOL – Sunreef 80 Eco Power Catamaran

The e-revolution is coming. Dropping in on our friends at Voyage Charters in Sopers Hole, we saw their take on the future of catamaran electrification. I think we can all agree that diesel generators are the most annoying part of sailing yachts – their noise, pollution, and smell are completely incongruous with the fundamental concept of sailing, yet every yacht currently needs one (or two) generators to power the aircon and amenities such as hair dryers. Diesel motors are also noisy and belch smoke when there is insufficient wind to power the boat.

Voyage has redefined this with their new series of electric catamarans such as the Voyage 480 Electric. The diesel motors have been replaced with virtually silent electric engines driven by batteries that can be recharged by solar panels, plugged in ashore, or by onboard generators. Generators are only used when the batteries are below 20% charge, meaning that you will not always need to hear the generator when you’re sleeping, even if you have the aircon on.

We also saw the impressive SOL Sunreef 80 Eco electric power catamaran. She’s gorgeous and virtually silent, with an electric drive train and solar skin. While she also, at times, resorts to backup generators, much of the time cruising and sleeping on SOL is virtually silent.

We expect to see much more of this in the future, as climate-conscious charters are demanding more sustainable options, and hope that soon all sailing yachts will be powered either by the wind or quiet electric motors.

Other Updates and Useful Information

Not crowded over Xmas. We arrived in the BVI on the 19th and finished on the 27th. Surprisingly, it did not seem crowded – the big crowds appear to come after Christmas. We also had no Christmas Winds, making it highly enjoyable to be there, although we sailed less than expected.

Amazing Sunsets on Anegada. It never seems to fail – we’ve been to Anegada countless times, and we’ve always had stunning, nearly hour-long, sunsets. This held true this year. Maybe it’s because of Tortola and JVD off in the distance that creates a weather pattern ideal for sunsets, but Anegada seldom disappoints!

Technological Innovation.

To meet the growing need, there are plenty of companies investing in the development of more efficient charging technologies. This includes creating faster charging options, smart charging systems that optimise energy use and wireless charging solutions. These innovations are essential as the electric boat market continues to expand. One company is Aqua superPower, integrating their charging systems in the US, UK and Italy, enabling users to charge all electric boat brands. They have partnered with MDL marina group, the first UK marina group to offer charging. 

The Challenges

Like with all development and change, there are some hurdles that the boating sector is facing when it comes to supplying this infrastructure for the transition to electric boating. The main concern is the cost of developing and maintaining this new infrastructure, resulting in some resistance to change. 

The Marinas of the Future 

Marinas consistently have to adapt to meet the changing needs of boaters. We are seeing new smart marina management systems put in place to optimize energy usage. Many marinas are exploring and investing in research and development for renewable energy sources to enhance sustainability credentials further. Looking ahead, there will need to be increased collaboration to establish these networks and to promote the growth of electric boating. 

As more infrastructure is developed, it gives more confidence for owners to make the switch from traditional to electric. Greener thrills: How can a yacht have more eco-friendly water toys?

On a crewed charter catamaran, you can have so much fun getting out on the ocean exploring new places, and spending quality time with loved ones. What else would you need? 

Water toys, of course! Watersports and water toys turn a simple day on the water into pure exhilaration. But when it comes to reducing the yacht’s environmental footprint, the toy box has a lot to answer for. Now, with increasingly innovative designs and green technology, a new wave of eco-friendly water toys is on the rise.

Powered by humans 

Put aside the fuel and diesel needed for fun, and harness the energy you have in yourself! There are so many toys powered by humans, whether paddleboarding or kayaking. These toys offer a fresh alternative to traditional motorized options. They allow you to immerse yourself fully into nature, contribute to a greener playtime, and give you a workout on the side! 

Watts of fun 

Electric is the future! And what’s not to like about virtually silent, emission-free fun? Many innovative electric water toys, such as surfboards, jet skis, and inflatable boats, combine cutting-edge technology with sustainability. By using electric motors, they produce zero emissions and reduce the impact in terms of noise and vibrations. These toys give a thrilling ride without the guilt of fuel. 

If your toys do have to run on fuel, make sure they use 4-stroke, not 2-stroke engines. Without going into the details, 2-stroke engines are incredibly pollutive. A single two-stroke engine produces pollution equivalent to that of 30 to 50 four-stroke automobiles because they mix oil and gas and don’t burn them very efficiently.

Foiling alternatives 

Water toys with foiling technology have taken water-based adventures to the next level. Foiling toys such as hydrofoil surfboards, kite foils, and sailboats use specialized wings or foils beneath the surface to lift them above the waves, enabling the user to glide effortlessly over the ocean. 

Toys made better 

A long-standing issue with many of the current toys on the market is the materials, but today many manufacturers now consider the life cycle of a product and prioritize sustainable materials and production methods. This helps to reduce the carbon footprint and minimizes waste. Many are now made from recycled plastics or biodegradable materials – you can even get golf balls made of fish food! 

We all know that the yachting community must set a path toward sustainability and a circular economy to survive and for the planet’s future. While significant emphasis is being put on the yacht to be more sustainable, it also must extend to everything that comes with it – including the tenders and toys!

Green yachting: Could these technologies be the answer?

As the world grapples with the urgent environmental pressures it is facing and the need for more sustainable practices, can the power of technology help turn things around? Can we transform our industry through advanced technology, new approaches and innovations?

AI & Autonomy

AI seems to be everywhere these days. AI is beginning to help with sustainability on yachts by interacting with advanced navigation systems to optimize fuel consumption and, therefore lower carbon emissions. For example, AI can:

  • plot a more efficient course taking into account winds, tides and currents.
  • adjust speed for optimal fuel consumption
  • more efficiently use fuel in the engines

Smart-Yacht technology 

Alongside improving fuel efficiency, there are also now intelligent solutions for advanced monitoring systems. These systems enable the crew to track the consumption of energy onboard. Utilizing these and making decisions based on data can allow the crew to identify areas of excessive use and adjust accordingly. Again, minimizing the reliance on fossil fuels. 

Online learning 

Today everything is at the touch of a button on a smartphone. Technology plays a crucial role in promoting education and awareness within our yachting community. Multiple apps and digital platforms are now providing Captains and crew with access to information on more sustainable practices and guidelines. By fostering this culture, the industry can collectively work together toward a better future. 

Alternative propulsion 

Technology is also changing the way we drive our yachts. Greener propulsion systems are enabling the industry to reduce its emissions. These systems, such as hybrid and electric, have gained significant attention, and for good reason. They utilize a combination of electrification, batteries, and energy recovery systems – with a lot of energy coming from renewable sources such as solar panels being integrated into the superstructure of the yacht.
