The capital of Sicily, Palermo, is a majestic city of both decay and splendour. Seppia (cuttlefish) is served in its own black sauce with pasta.

Meat dishes are always popular. Many are traditionally made with lamb or goat. Best known outside Sicily is vitello alla marsala (veal marsala), one of many regional meat specialties.

And let’s not forget about desserts! The mouth watering Cannoli are tubular crusts with creamy ricotta and sugar filling. Frutta di Martorana (or pasta reale) are almond marzipan pastries coloured and shaped to resemble real fruit and of course we could not forget the Sicilian gelato (ice cream)!

PENNA, a luxury 100m Futuristic Super Yacht Concept!

Alex McDiarmid is regarded as one of the leading avant-garde luxury yacht designers, whose primary aim is to provide a product that fits the consumers requirements. He is thorough and constantly questioning the theory behind the process, questioning the norm. He has created a small team of highly skilled designers, based in Aix-en-Provence who provide innovative ideas to manufacturers all around the world.

The PENNA 100m Super Yacht is the newest concept by McDiarmid’s design team. PENNA comes from the French and Latin word for feather, where there inspiration began. We must not forget that the PENNA is a concept, thus it has many different aims. Based on a feather, the team wanted the PENNA to be sleek and their designs definitely show this. Moreover, the shape allows for natural flight to flood the vessel. The hull is made from steel while the superstructure is in aluminium. The introduction of the aluminium creates strength and reduces weight and fuel consumption. Thus, it is clear to see that McDiarmid and his team want to create a product that is durable and has less impact on the environment.

There is a design for PENNA to include a hybrid power Diesel Electric propulsion system with pod drives, electric Voith Inline Propulsors/thrusters, Volvo Penta D16 MG gensets, Valance batteries, as well as a design for a conventional 4 x MTU 3600 kw set up.

The interior comprises accommodation for up to 14 guests, as well as for 24 crew. Her aft deck houses a helicopter platform, ribs, tenders, toys and potential for a sailing yacht. There are also designs to incorporate laboratories so that the yacht can be used as a research vessel. This is an exciting prospect and we look forward to other exciting concepts by McDiarmid in the future.

Van Dutch 40, ROYAL I oozes elegance, performance and comfort on the French Riviera

The iconic Van Dutch 40 motor yacht is the product of the world famous Dutch design house, Vanguard. Van Dutch’s are striking avant garde creations, incorporating modern design and advanced technology. Vanguard’s aims were quite simple: to “create a lightweight yacht with longevity and economical practicality.” The V-Shaped engine configuration creates a sharpened aft to maximise balance and the Van Dutch’s centre of gravity, optimizing speed whilst reducing fuel consumption. We must pay tribute to Frank Mulder for the design of the Van Dutch, whose underwater design has made spray and slamming a thing of the past.

Reaching speeds of up to 40 knots, the Van Dutch 40 provides excellent performance and cornering. The Yanmar engine reduces engine noise and vibrations, which creates a smooth and silent ride. She also incorporates an autopilot and navigation system, making her a very simple luxury yacht to skipper.

Below deck, the Van Dutch is once again unique. There is a hydraulic table for 8 which can transform into a bed. Guests will find the latest televisions, sound systems and kitchen equipment. There is also a fully functional W/C with a hot and cold water supply. The deck is covered in a teak composite, which makes maintenance very simple. The Van Dutch 40’s cockpit is a modular solarium that extends into a great lounging area.

There are two other models in the Van Dutch portfolio: the 30ft and the 55ft. They both incorporate the exquisite design features of the 40, as well as performance and comfort.
