On Friday 2nd November, we, the Boatbloggings team were present at the Salon de la Plaisance du Golfe de St Tropez, at the Marines de Cogolin. As Boatbloggings.com is the news site for Boatbookings.com, meeting and networking with many suppliers was very important.

Of the yachts on show, many were for sale, but we had two highlights of the day, which we would love to share with you.

Med 48

The Med 48 is a new build yacht available for charter for the 2013 Summer season, from St Tropez. She is a beautiful new design which reminded us of a Van Dutch, with a sleek and modern exterior. Her interior was spacious, with two double cabins both en suite and a small galley area too. One of our favourite parts of her was her was her sunbed area, which can be configured in many different ways, from two benches facing each other with a table in the middle, two benches facing the same way, to collapsing the seats down to reveal a full sunbed, with enough room for several to comfortably enjoy the sun. Steve Jobs Custom Luxury Yacht Charter Feadship Unveiled

Just over a year after his death, the luxury motor yacht that Apple founder Steve Jobs commissioned and helped to design has finally been completed and launched in the Netherlands.Described by some as looking like a “floating Apple Store”, the custom built 80m (260ft) Feadship is named VENUS, after the Roman goddess of love.

Job’s biographer, Walter Isaacson, suggests that Jobs became almost obsessed with the yacht in the months leading up to his death. Jobs is quoted as saying “I know that it’s possible I will die and leave Laurene [his wife] with a half-built boat. But I have to keep going on it. If I don’t, it’s an admission that I’m about to die.”

Designed in collaboration with French product designer Philippe Starck, VENUS is now a posthumous testament to the sleek and crisp white designs that became synonymous with Apple during Job’s time as head of the company. While Starck denies that there is any relation between the design of this yacht and Apple (he insists that the electronics company and a boat of this size are completely different), he does admit that VENUS is a Steve Jobs work”.

Jobs had asked the chief engineer of the Apple Stores to design a special glass that would allow 10-foot-high windows while also providing the necessary structural support. Apple also provided 7 24-inch iMac’s to be set up on the bridge of the yacht, among other Apple equipment.

The Jobs’ family reportedly attended the launch of the yacht and gave a customised iPod Shuffle to everybody who helped with the build, as a thank you for their ‘hard work and craftsmanship.’

With their ability to custom build yachts to exacting owners specifications, Feadship has been a major force creating the super yacht market as we know it today. The company has built over 200 yachts since it was founded in 1949, releasing an average of just 4 or 5 new yachts a year.

In addition to the Apple founder, Feadship has built a 200-foot yacht for Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 1996 as well as custom yachts for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovic, founder of the Ford Motor Company Henry Ford, and Malcolm Forbes of Forbes magazine.

Planning to Build a New Yacht? Why Not Try, Before You Buy? (by Guest Blogger Phil Friedman)

Back in the days when I was running a megayacht shipyard, one new 50 metre build I did ended up costing a lot more (and I mean a lot more), and taking a lot more time to complete than originally anticipated. This was not, as you might assume, because our yard was inefficient at yacht construction, but because the build’s owner began the project without a really clear idea of what he and his family ultimately needed and wanted.

 

For example, the owner’s architect provided a general arrangement that included a large “country kitchen” style galley on the main deck. After the galley was about 75% built out to the agreed upon design and specifications, the owner and his architect came aboard.  They decided they didn’t like the main deck location for the galley after all, and issued a change order to move the galley to the lower deck, and modify it into a “professional” style kitchen.

The build proceeded, and once again the owner, some family members, and the architect came to inspect the work in process, which included the revised galley, now almost 100% complete. Unfortunately, they all decided that they really liked the idea of gathering in the “kitchen”, as they did at their homes, and that the lower deck galley was just too dark and not sufficiently conducive to family style conviviality, after all. Enter a new change order to move the galley back to the main deck.

To my mind, a big factor in the confusion was that they were using their “family architect”, who had designed several houses for them, but who had not previously designed a yacht. Unfamiliar with how spaces on a yacht feel in the real world, as opposed to how they seem on the drawing board, their residential architect was not able to keep them on a clear and ultimately correct course. He could not help them anticipate what they would ultimately like, and instead was thrown back on evaluating the look and feel of the interior space, especially the galley, only after such spaces were mostly completed.

So, you ask, what’s the point of this yarn? It is that, if you are considering a new build, you should consider chartering before you finalize your plans and specifications for that new build. Chartering one or more yachts of the size and type you are considering having built will provide you with the opportunity to sort out your true tastes and requirements — at least, to as great a degree as is ever possible

Spaces and configurations that look okay to you on paper (or on the computer), may not feel right after you live in them for a week or two, or more. For instance, during a charter, you may find that you really like having the master suite on the main deck, but that you don’t mind having the galley down, close to the crew quarters forward. Or you may find that extra space devoted to your master bath would be worth scrimping a bit on that space you wanted for a private en suite business office. Indeed, perhaps you’ll find that the place from where you’re most like to conduct business is the upper boat deck or skylounge. The possibilities for comfortable living in a new yacht are almost endless, and often the best way to sort out those possibilities is to try before you buy.

Yachting Weather

Yacthing Weather is a great app for Captains, sailors, or anyone interested in the weather on the waters. It’s a great application that we’ve been using for some months now, and each update just gets better and better. It gives you all the information you would need to plan your charter, from temperature, wind direction and speed, wave height, wave length, wave period, storm risk, precipitation risk, humidity, pressure. It’s a great weather app in general, not only useful for those on the water.

Available for free, we highly recommend trying the app out!

Compass Eye – Marine Navigation and Bearings

Compass Eye is another great iPhone app, available at £2.99, that works with real-time camera and map views, bearing markers and an 8x zoom. Compass Eye is a fun way to make sure of your bearing. As most compass apps rely on a horizontal bearing and work only on that angle, but Compass Eye works on any angle or with any orientation, with the use of the camera.

Luxury Yacht Charter for the Monaco Grand Prix 2013, Part I.

The Monaco Grand Prix is arguably the most famous and prestigious motor race in the world, alongside the 24 Hour Le Mans and Indianapolis 500 races. There is, however, no doubt that the Monaco Grand Prix is the most glamorous sporting event in the world, which attracts hundreds of celebrities, business VIP’s and royals every year! The streets of Monte Carlo have played host to the Grand Prix since 1929, providing a combination of tight corners, sweeping bends and fast straights. This is by far, the most accessible motor racing track in the world, being at the public’s disposal for 51 weeks of the year. There is therefore no surprise that every weekend, you will see, or more often hear the sounds of young men driving around the streets of Monte Carlo in their Ferrari’s, Mercedes’ and Lamborghini’s.

This Circuit is unique in the Formula 1 Calendar:

1) The circuit is the only one to feature a long tunnel, forcing the drivers to adjust their eyes from sun to shade on every lap.

2) It is the only event on the calendar not to feature a podium – the celebrations are held on the steps of the royal box.

3) Monaco is the only event to hold its practice day on the Thursday before the race, allowing the roads to be opened to the public on the Friday.

There has been no lack of controversy during the races history, including deliberate ploys to block the track, as well as many serious accidents and the fatality of Lorenzo Bandini in 1967. Michael Schumacher has won the race five times, which equaled Graham Hill’s record. Many enthusiasts will argue that the best period of racing was between 1984 and 1993 with Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna dominating the race for the decade. This included the arrest of Senna on the Monday following the race of 1987, where he rode a motorcycle around the track without a helmet! You will be pleased to know that he was released by the police officers, once they had realised who it was.

Therefore, the Monaco Grand Prix has always lived up to its name for being the most popular, entertaining and prestigious motor race in history. It is one of our favourite events on the French Riviera and there is no better way to enjoy it than on a private  Formula One luxury yacht charter. We recommend multiple day luxury yacht charters from Cannes or Antibes on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and traveling to Monaco by water, avoiding the congested motorway.
