See Why Indonesia's Raja Ampat & Spice Islands Are Among the World's Best Yachting Destinations on This Luxury Crewed Yacht Itinerary

Day 1: Ambon | Day 2: Banda Islands | Day 3: Pulau Koon | Day 4: Wayil | Day 5: Thousand Temples | Day 6: Kapatcol | Day 7: Boano Island | Day 8: Return to Ambon

A few centuries ago, the islands of eastern Indonesia sparked a global race for what were then the world's most prized commodities: cloves, nutmeg, and mace. European powers sailed halfway around the world to control the lucrative spice trade, leaving a lasting mark on the region's history. Today, travelers are rediscovering the area for completely different reasons: the rugged natural beauty and rich heritage of the Moluccas.

Now known as the Maluku Islands, this region pairs a fascinating colonial past with remarkable natural scenery. Volcanic islands, lush forests, and secluded bays give way to the dramatic limestone karsts and turquoise lagoons of Raja Ampat. Venture beneath the surface, and you'll find some of the world's richest marine ecosystems, with vibrant coral reefs and an extraordinary diversity of marine life.

A private yacht charter lets you experience these far-flung destinations at your own pace, with opportunities to explore quiet anchorages, snorkel secluded reefs, and discover islands far from the usual tourist trail. Conditions vary across the region, but November to April is generally a favorable period. Our Boatbookings charter team can help plan the route around local weather and sea conditions.

Day 2:  Banda Islands & Banda Neira

Gunung Api stands tall near the Banda Islands

Welcome to the historic Spice Islands. The Banda archipelago was once the world's principal source of nutmeg and mace, making it a fiercely contested prize for European trading powers in the 16th and 17th centuries.

On Banda Neira, step ashore to explore the remains of the Dutch colonial era, including Fort Nassau, built by the Dutch East India Company. The island's historic streets and views of the volcanic Gunung Api offer a glimpse into a past shaped by the global spice trade. Back on the water, head out for a snorkel or dive among the archipelago's coral reefs, where colorful marine life thrives beneath the surface.

Discover the waters around Pulau Koon, known among divers for its exceptionally rich marine life. Drop anchor near the aptly named Too Many Fish reef site, where nutrient-rich currents support an abundance of underwater activity.

Join your dive guides to explore the reef, keeping an eye out for schools of fish, reef sharks, and other marine life. With a little luck, you may even spot larger pelagic species passing through these waters.

Continue toward the Wayil region of Raja Ampat, where steep, forest-covered limestone karsts rise dramatically from clear turquoise water. This spectacular seascape is best explored slowly, weaving between the islands and discovering quiet coves along the way.

Take the kayaks out for a closer look at the coastline or slip into the water for a snorkel around the island of Yillet and its surrounding reefs. This is your chance to explore beyond the yacht and see why Raja Ampat is dubbed the “Last Paradise on Earth.”

Make an excursion to Tomolol Cave, an impressive cavern that can be explored by boat, with towering rock walls and a waterway winding through the limestone. Later, return to your yacht for a leisurely afternoon on deck. As the light softens over the islands, enjoy a drink and some refreshments before dinner.

Make your way toward Boano Island, off the coast of western Seram in the Maluku Islands. After the dramatic karst scenery of Raja Ampat, this quieter stop is where you can slow down and enjoy another side of eastern Indonesia.

Spend time swimming and snorkeling in the surrounding waters, or simply relax on the sundeck and take in the island views. With fewer visitors than Indonesia's better-known destinations, Boano is a fitting place to enjoy the privacy and freedom of a yacht charter before returning to Ambon.
