Cannes Film Festival, Day 12 – Zulu – Our Yacht Nominee:CALLISTO!

The glamour and excitement of the Cannes Film Festival is such that the final day is already upon us! The most prestigious film festival in the world has passed in a whirlwind of celebrities, fast cars, and flashing sequins. Yet it is also never one to go out with a whisper. The final day of the 66^th Festival de Cannes will close with a screening of the thriller Zulu by Jerome Salle featuring acting heavy weights Orlando Bloom who we know from films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland, Ghost Dog).

It is an adaptation of the fantastic novel of the same name by Caryl Ferey which was awarded the Grand prix de litterature policiere in 2008. This powerful film sees cops, Orlando Bloom and Forest Whitaker team up in an attempt to bring the murderer of an 18 year old girl to justice in a South Africa still rife with racial and social tensions from the apartheid.

Cannes Film Festival, Day 10 – The Immigrant – Our Yacht Nominee: Prestige 46!

Day 10 of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival sees the premiere of James Gray's 'The Immigrant.' James Gray will be bringing his fourth film to the Cannes Film Festival in the hope that he will recieve the highly coveted Palme d'Or trophy for his efforts. The film stars the truly talented Marion Cotillard, who plays a Polish immigrant in 1920's New York City. Marion swiftly falls under the spell of a small-time pimp played by Joaquin Phoenix, a regular in Gray's cinematic masterpieces. Cannes Film Festival, Day 9 – La Vie d'Adele (Blue is the Warmest Colour) – Our Yacht Nominee: BABY LOVE!

Day 9 of the Cannes Film Festival features La Vie d'Adele or in English as it is known, Blue is the Warmest Colour. It is the longest film up for the coveted Palme d'Or, at 179 minutes but is typical of director, Abdellatif Kechiche and his intimate and fastidious style in which he allows long takes to develop the characters and tensions in a natural, realistic manner. It is a film loosely adapted by Kechiche from the prize-winning graphic novel by Julie Maroh, “Le Bleu est une couleur chaude”, and portrays a deeply moving portrait of 15-year-old girl getting to grips with her sexual identity and the trials and tribulations of this young love. With a phenomenal performance from Lea Seydoux and a fantastic debut from newcomer, Adele Exarchopoulos it poses intriguing questions from that of gender and sexual identity to issues of social belonging.

Cannes Film Festival, Day 8 – Only God Forgives – Our Yacht Nominee: Azimut 43

Now that we have reached day 8 of the Cannes Film Festival, we are happy to announce that the sunshine is back and here to stay!

On Day 8, the film of the day is Only God Forgives, by Danish director, screenwriter and producer, Nicolas Winding Refn. The film follows Julian, played by one of the most popular men of the moment, Ryan Gosling, who runs a boxing club in Bangkok. An American fugitive who uses his boxing business as a cover for his family's drug-smuggling business, Julian is well respected in the criminal underworld. Only God Forgives portrays the complications of his life when his mother, portrayed by Kristin Scott Thomas,
compels him to hunt down, and kill, his brother's murderer.

One of the themes within the film is the colour red. Reports say that there is often a reddish hue to the scenes in the film, and scenes set both inside and outside feature many red lanterns. The most obvious use of red is, of course, blood. Of which there is a lot!
