Our charter experts have compiled the following information to help you plan your Greece Boat Charter Holiday, helping to understand the terminology, costs, and general guidelines for Greece chartering and sailing vacations.
What is the difference between Bareboat, Bareboat with Skipper, and Fully Crewed Greece Luxury Yacht Charter?
In Greece, bareboat sailing charters must start/end on Saturday, embarkation is usually in the afternoon, and disembarkation early in the morning, so what we call a week charter is actually 6 days + night as the boat needs to return to the base on Friday evening. Skippered charters are usually bareboat yachts that we add a skipper to, so the same rules apply.
Bareboat/skippered charters have designated bases/ports, which in Greece are Athens, Paros, Rhodes, Kos, Corfu, Lefkada and Skiathos. The general rule is that embarkation/disembarkation must take place in these bases, although occasionally owners offer other options.
The majority of crewed motor yachts and Greek crewed catamarans are based in Athens; therefore, for embarkation/disembarkation in other ports, relocation fees are likely required.
What are the restrictions on yacht capacity?
The maximum number of guests allowed on board is generally 12 as per maritime safety regulations, but depending on the size it could be lower and also depending on the insurance of each specific yacht. For crewed yachts, it will depend on the size, but usually, the rule is the number of berths stated in the charter yacht capacity; therefore, a 5-cabin yacht will be able to host 10 passengers + crew. This is set by government safety regulations and is not flexible. There is no difference between adults and children.
See our Yacht Charter Basics page for full information.
Yacht Charter Budget - What are the costs of yacht charters in Greece?
It is important to state a budget for us to send yachts that match your criteria. In Greece, there are typically the following costs involved:
Bareboat Charters
- Charter Fee (This covers the rental of the boat)
- Food, beverages, and provisions for the yacht (cleaning items, basics, etc.). Bareboat usually means that the yacht is completely empty.
- End cleaning
- Port fees: In Greece, port fees can vary from 10 to 20 euros/day, depending on the port
- Fuel
- Skipper, if required, plus food provisioning for the skipper
For crewed charters:
- Charter Fee
- VAT of 12%
- Food & beverages
- Fuel for the yacht, water toys, and tenders
- Communication costs
- Gratuities for the crew
- Port fees
- Private marina fees (if applicable)
On both types of charters:
- Canal fees and relocation costs, if applicable
What is the difference in price between a bareboat catamaran with a skipper and hostess and a fully crewed catamaran?
The difference in price between a bareboat catamaran with a skipper and hostess, and a fully crewed catamaran is not as much as you might think! Here's an example using a Lagoon 50 as a base case:
| Greece Catamarans (Prices in Euros) | Bareboat Catamaran Lagoon 50 | Crewed Catamaran Lagoon 50 |
|---|---|---|
| Charter fee per week for 4 cabins | 8,000 | 14,500 |
| 30% APA for crewed catamaran | 0 | 4,350 |
| Food and drinks provisioning assumption (bareboat) | 5,600 | |
| Skipper and Hostess and fuel/ moorings/ berth costs (bareboat) | 3,500 | |
| Comfort pack for bareboat | 500 | |
| Water Toys included in crewed charters (need ordered on bareboat) | 500 | |
| TAX - 12% | 960.00 | 1,740.00 |
| All-inclusive Price | 19,060 | 20,590 |
| Price per Couple per Day | 680.71 | 735.36 |
| Price per Couple per Week (based on 4 couples) | 2,722.86 | 2,941.43 |
This is just a comparison, and your needs may differ, but the cost of a crewed catamaran, with a crew that runs the boat full time, is not much more expensive than a bareboat catamaran with skipper and hostess! Our charter experts are happy to provide an example that matches your needs.
What are the ideal destinations in the various Greek Regions?
Cyclades Islands: The best time of the year to sail/cruise the Cyclades Islands is June, early July, and September onwards. The end of July and August are renowned for having the Meltemi winds, which come from the north and can make sailing/cruising conditions very difficult.
Saronic, Ionian, and Dodecanian Islands: The Saronic Islands are very sheltered, so they are a good choice throughout the summer. The Ionian and Dodecanese Islands are also great choices throughout the summer.
Shoulder seasons: If you can charter in May/June or September/October, often referred to as the "shoulder seasons," you will find lower prices, great weather, and fewer people.
How do I find out which boats are available at the times I need?

What is an ETIAS?
Beginning in the last quarter of 2026, travelers will be required to obtain an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) travel authorisation to enter the majority of European countries, including Italy, Greece, Croatia, France, and Spain. You can fill out an application using the ETIAS website or mobile app. You will need 20 Euros (about 24 USD) and relevant travel documents, such as a passport. Once submitted, the application could take up to 14 days to process; however, in some cases, you might receive confirmation within minutes. Upon approval of your application, you will receive your unique ETIAS application number: make sure you have access to this number for your entire stay. The EITAS is valid for short-term stays, typically for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
