Genoa, or Genova as it is known to the Italians, is the capital city of the Italian province of Liguria (the Italian Riviera). It is known as la Superba (the superb one) due to its glorious past as one of the prestigious Maritime Republics in the Middle Ages, along with Pisa, Amalfi and later on, Venice. These Republics were powerful and wealthy, wielding mighty trade links across the oceans of the world and Genoa was home to one of the strongest naval forces in the Mediterranean.

The fantastic architecture of the era can be seen in immaculate condition throughout the city and is a real testament to the greatness of this city’s past.
