About Chartering in Tortola
Tortola -"land of the Turtle Dove" - is the largest and most populated island in the BVI archipelago, and the island where most charters begin and end. It is a mountainous, volcanic island 12 miles (19 km) long and 3 miles (5 km) wide. It was discovered by Chrisopher Columbus in The main town is Road Town, where most of the boats are moored, and the population of the Island is about 25,000. Access to Road Town is either by ferry from the neighboring US Virgin Islands, or by bridge from the airport on Beef Island.
Road Town is the location of literally hundreds of charter yachts, and has all the necessary shops for provisioning, scuba gear, and everything else you need to enjoy your charter. It also has plenty of hotels if you need to spend a night before or immediately after your charter.
Wickham's Cay is teh center of the charter activity, which is connected to the Main Street area near the ferry dock. You will find a good variety of shops, bars and restaurants in this area.
Road Town is a standard Caribbean town, complete with red tin roofs, but because of all the charter activity, it also has an industrial/commercial feel to it.
