Finding the Right Boat

Finding the Right Boat at the Right Price

Some people are overwhelmed by the amount of choice and decisions available when chartering a boat. We’re here to help you through this maze - think of us as a boat consultant. We offer you unbiased advice because we’re not trying to rent you any specific boat. However to get you going, here are some basics that might help you find the right boat at the right price for you.

The right boat

Once you’ve decided whether you want a Power Yacht or Sailing Yacht (See “Charter Basics”), and which area you would like to sail in, the most fundamental decision is the number of cabins you require. All of our boats have detailed floor plans such to help you make this decision. Each couple will require their own cabin, and if you will be having a skipper on board, of course they will require one as well. Here is an example of our Sailing Yachts by number of cabins:

2 Cabin Layout

Example: Bavaria 32
Show all 2 Cabins

3 Cabin Layout

Example: Oceanis 393
Show all 3 Cabins

4 Cabin Layout

Example: Gib Sea 43
Show all 4 Cabins

5+ Cabin Layout

Example: Bavaria 50
Show all 5 Cabins

You can easily search by “number of cabins” desired on our search page to see all of our boats available with the number of cabins you require. Alternatively you can also search for the “number of passengers” (make sure if you want a skipper that you count him/her as a passenger)

Boat length

Once you’ve decided how many cabins you require, you’ll generally find that there are multiple lengths available to you. Obviously, the shorter the boat, the cheaper it is. Our only recommendation here is that while a 1 foot distance may not seem like a lot, remember it is multiplied in three dimensions within the tight quarters of a boat, and so it does make significant difference on the overall feeling of space. Often, one foot adds sufficient additional room for an additional head, or more cooking area.

We always include an interior shot of our boats – take a look at it and try to imagine your party there. Again, review the layout as well – are the head placements and number ok? Will you be able to comfortably sleep everybody? Are there bunks in a cabin (they work well for kids, the skipper or friends that are not couples), do you like the layout of the galley? 5 extra minutes studying these images can save you a lot of inconvenience during your holiday! If you have any questions, please email us, even your question is as vague as “we have 2 couples and 3 kids, what boat would you recommend?”

... At the Right Price

Boat prices vary according to season, type of boat, location, and age of boat. High season prices (Summer in the Mediterranean, Xmas and Spring Break in the Caribbean) are often double the off season prices. Sailing in mid season or “shoulder” times, such as September in the Med, often give you the best value – great weather, fewer crowds and lower prices. If you’re not forced by kid’s school holidays or work schedules to holiday during the high seasons, we’d highly recommend going during these times. You’ll also generally get a much better selection of boats, and the charter operators will be less harried and be able to spend more time with you. (Flights will be less expensive as well).

Because of the great variety and number of boats available, we can't put every iteration on the site. So if you can't seem to find exactly the right price on the site, please contact us and we'll do our best to find it for you!

Charter Economics

OK – you’re excited about chartering a boat, but the price may seem a bit daunting. With a little maths, you will generally find that the economics of a boat are highly affordable. Take this example:

Euros
Pounds
Charter price per week € 3,000 £2,069
Number of Couples 3
Price per couple per week € 1,000 £690
Price per couple per day € 143 £99

A nice 4 Star hotel with sea view, beach, kitchen and watersports included will generally run you at least this plus you can change the view from your room whenever you want!

Fees and other Charter Costs

All charters involve some additional costs - fuel, mooring fees, provisioning, tips, etc. Please see a full discussion of these costs on our Fees and Insurance Page.
