About Cowes Week
Cowes, located in the Solent area of the South of England, has long been considered the home of sailing and international yacht racing. Since it's conception in 1826 the Cowes Week Regatta now boasts a more than 1000 yachts and 8500 competitors racing every day for 8 days. It is the longest running and largest sailing regatta in the world.
This tradition of being held in the first week of August has continued annually to present day, with the exception of during the two World Wars.
The event sees a racing fleet of around 1000 yachts competing together with thousands of professional and amateur sailors hailing from all over the world. Olympic sailors, corporate groups, family crew, yachting enthusiasts - anyone who loves being on the sea alongside (or preferably in front of) fellow sailing enthusiasts!
Skandia Cowes Week has customarily attracted the rich and famous, including members of the Royal Family, as well as a wider audience, perhaps due to the fact that it ties in so perfectly with the quintessentially English summer social schedule.
The regatta incorporates an extensive social programme organized by the various clubs and committees associated with the racing. So there is something for everyone – hard core race sailors, convivial yachties, and those seeking to enjoy the party atmosphere and carnival spirit ashore – great cafés, cocktail parties, yachting balls, top class restaurants, and the world renowned Cowes beer tent which has up to 4000 revellers a day enjoying the festival!
