The Crew
Captain: Ben Heslop
Chef/Hostess: Melissa Heslop
Leave the “real” world behind when you step onboard and let Ben and Melissa pamper you to your hearts content.
Ben and Melissa have been chartering in the Caribbean for the last three years and every year brings them more pleasure. They love meeting new people, and introducing them to the wonders of sailing in Paradise
They met in 1999 whilst working on yachts in Greece. Having both returned to the UK for Ben to complete a post-graduate Law degree, they married and bought an old English cottage to restore. They were both pursuing professional careers but the pull of the sea became too strong to resist however, and they returned to a life on the waves.
Ben started working as a sailing instructor during school holidays at the age of 13, working with children at first, but later with youngsters who had learning disability. He first experienced yachting at Cowes Week in 1989 and still cherishes his memories of Beaulieu and the J class “Velsheda” from then. He has had the opportunity of crewing on a variety of vessels from a classic Gaff rigged 1910 wooden trading ketch, to skippering the BT Global Challenge yacht “Heath Insured II”. He was sub editor on “Ports of Call” – a yachtsmans guide to facilities and contacts ashore, around the British Isles and northern Europe. Outside of the UK, he has worked on boats in the South of France, Sardinia, Corsica, Turkey, Greece and the Caribbean. Bens interests include kitesurfing, following his local rugby team and reading, and he is an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore with DTI Commercial Endorsement.
Melissa divided her childhood between riding her horses competitively and sailing dinghies. After many wonderful trips sailing around the Eastern Mediterranean, she resolved to combine her love of sailing and her degree in Ancient History setting off to live and work in Greece. Indirectly, this also signalled the start of her culinary career. Having had some previous catering experience, she began to assist in an understaffed kitchen catering for up to 200 people. Here she delighted in using the fresh local produce in innovative and colourful ways. Her love of experimentation, and presentation have built upon this and she now takes great pleasure in working in a more intimate, tailored culinary environment.
Outside of the galley, she still enjoys riding and supporting her local rugby team (not the same one as Bens!). She has recently taken up kitesurfing, and when in the UK she drives endlessly around the countryside in her little red MG Midget.
